A French contemplative-travel feast.
The provencal sun pours across the pages, as the reader is gently beckoned to bask in the creative challenges, deep peace, and immense joys of a contemplative orientation in the world--as seen through the lens of the author's Sabbatical season spent in a ravine-edged hermitage, embraced by an ancient olive grove, nestled within a Medieval French village in the Maritime Alps.
Gifts for the reader abound in the exploration of such themes as presence, silence, simplicity, balance, community, generosity. This contemplative memoir celebrates the gift of sacred solitude (hermitage), the beauty of creation (olive grove), and the immense dignity of each life, human or animal (village.) With simple eloquence, the villagers themselves--through the daily humility, warm humor and integrity of their own lives--encourage readers to look within to receive and rediscover, yet more deeply, the intrinsic beauty and profound gift of their own lives.
With sensitive and compassionate brush-strokes, verbal paintings of village life emerge as such concepts as emptying and opening, dwelling in the Center, living in the "now" are encountered--not in a didactic way but rather in an attentive breathing-in of what each present moment offers. Cafe-table chats and sacramental altars are discovered, not as polarities, but as interconnected the secular and the spiritual recognized as a mutually-embracing expression of the dance of Life and Beauty in the One Love--sustaining the soul and nourishing the heart.

Hermitage Olive Grove Village A Sabbatical In the South of France eBook Mary Busse Reviews
What a glorious prosaic journey for the Franco-phile, the spiritual seeker, the meditative student. This would be a wonderful book for a small study group seeking to deepen their spiritual journey through meditative and centering prayer techniques. A truly inspirational read. I'm sending a copy to each of my children for Christmas and plan to gift many close friends, as well.
This little book is a true gift to yourself and your friends! It is a beautiful day by day account of the author's life for one month, while on sabbatical, and living in a small medieval village in the south of France. This story has the power to draw me into the author's experience. It makes me feel as though I am on the journey with her, and her experiences become my own.
Mary Busse's words so vividly, and perfectly capture the scenes and moments of each day. It is truly a feast for the senses in every way possible! In my mind, I can literally see the majestic mountains and sea, the beautiful vegetation, and the people in the village, along with their dog companions, as they go about their daily activities. I can hear their happy chatter as they greet and converse while inside or sitting outside the cafes. Plus, I can smell and taste the hot coffee and delicious offerings from the bakery. And, all along, my heart and mind expand and are refreshed by the spiritual beauty and truths which the writer discovers each day, both in stillness, and in sharing life with her new friends in the village.
This book has opened my eyes to see the beauty, and grace, and love that God has for each person, and all of His creation. This story reminds me of the importance to look for beauty in each human being, while also taking time out for silence and solitude to nourish my own soul. Well done, Mary Busse, and thank you for sharing your gifts with all of us!
The author describes a medieval village in the South of France with excellent clarity and overtones. Tourrettes/sur/Loup is lost in time, and the reader wants to walk behind her as she discovers the myriad charms found within its 17th century walls and ramparts.
Congratulations to Mary Busse for this excellent work filled with imagery, delight, and serenity. She leads us well.
Last April, prior to our travels to France, Mary Busse shared a draft of her sabbatical memoir of nearly twenty years ago. When I began to read her wonderfully engaging account, I had no idea that the village of which she was writing was one where my husband and friends and I would spend our own magical week. As I read on, I began reading more and more passages out loud, sharing with my husband as Mary's narrative wove an engaging and amusing sense of a place that remains enchantingly old-world to this day. It's a gratifying read and the revelation back then that the village would soon come alive for us was, as it still is a year later, such beautiful shared synchronicity. I only wished then that our traveling companions could have read it as well.
My wish is answered as the book is now published and her tale of this wonderful place, its people and her deeply moving spiritual journeying and wholly compassionate nature can be shared with many more of us. It is homage to outward expressions of inner connecting and personal contemplative centering and peace. Her dear memoir so captures the spirit, sweet humor, and the gentleness of an otherwise ruggedly dramatic landscape and place and provides a sense of the communion and community she shared with some delightfully engaging local residents. The book is as much a treasure as she is.
