Smokey Dalton gets a call from an old friend to help transport a battered woman and her young daughter from Madison, Wisconsin, to a shelter in Chicago. When Smokey and Marvella Walker show up at the drop site, they learn that the woman is both white and a racist. She refuses to leave with them. And that’s only the beginning of their problems.

“You don’t need to be a fan of private-eye novels to admire Smokey You just need a conscience.”
—Kirkus Reviews starred review of Smoke-Filled Rooms
“Nelscott’s hard-boiled style gives an added blast of energy to the captivating story, and because her characters are so nuanced and naturally complex, we don’t know whom to trust.”

Family Affair A Smokey Dalton Story edition by Kris Nelscott Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
All of the Smokey Dalton books/short stories/novellas are fantastic, totally addictive and beautifully written. There is nothing else like them on the market. The series is based on the story of a Black detective who rescues a young boy during the Martin Luther King era.
Anyone writing a good review for this story is getting paid! This is a short story, and one I would guess that was sitting away in some file waiting to become a book. What should be a chapter of a book ought never be sold - let alone be sold as a book. We are finding this more and more with ebooks. You must pay attention when looking up books. In this case two of Kris Nelscott's books Guarding Lacy and Family Affair are short stories. Michael Connelly has one too and they leave people feeling frustrated and angry and disappointed in the author for letting themselves be used in this manner; they could not be this greedy, it must be the publishing company which is encouraging this behavior. Short stories are meant to be put in a book of 10 or so not as individual book for which you are billed separately. Just because you love the characters does not mean you will like a small part of a story; it is sort of like having one bite of food and seeing everyone else eating to their heart's content.
This was written in true Smokey Dalton style. Interesting and to the point. I absolutely have enjoyed reading all the books written by this author. I highly recommend her.
